Achievements

I have spoken on numerous occasions to various groups about domestic violence. I have appeared on several local television and radio stations. I've also made one television public service announcement and given interviews to six newspapers. In the past seven years I have visited several local prisons to talk about 'choices' once inmates are released. My message is always the same; violence is never justified.

I owe this credit to Mr. Landholt, former DAC Director, for giving me the opportunity to be a guest speaker for these organizations:

  • USC Social Worker students
  • USC Medical School students
  • SCDJJ Girls and Boys
  • Benedict College Students
  • Seminar at South Carolina State University on Stop the Violence
  • South Carolina Correctional Association
  • SCDC Teleconference
  • South Carolina Attorney General's S.T.O.P. Violence Against Women seminar, March, April, and September 2002, Charleston, Greenville, and Columbia, SC
  • Voices for a Violence Free Community, Hilton Head Island, SC, February, 2003

Four years ago, the Domestic Abuse Center honored me by establishing an award in my name: the WALLACE WENDELL SMITH award. I was given the honor of having this award named on my behalf because of my devotion to ending domestic violence. The Wallace Wendell Smith award is presented yearly to an individual who helps promote and work toward ending domestic violence.

Another award I am very proud of is the Watkins Pre-Release Center 1999 Volunteer of the Year Award. I received this award in April 2000. I felt very honored to be selected from over forty volunteers. My volunteer work involved counseling men who are incarcerated because of violent acts.

I am very proud of these awards; they mean more than a million dollars. I could not ask for a better life than what I have today. I give all the credit to God and the Domestic Abuse Center. I will never be able to repay them for what they've done for me.
